Ezra 10: 18-44
Ezra 10: 1-17 is one of the more complicated passages in the book of Ezra. It describes the returning of Law exiles, the concern over intermarriage, and Ezra’s response. In order to solve the problem, Ezra took action. However the actions of Ezra do not answer the question of whether dissolution of marriages is legal.
Rather, they demonstrate Ezra’s concern for his people. He knows that they have disobeyed Yhwh, yet he wants to lead them back to obey the law. And he does so by ordering the divorce of foreign wives.
To solve the intermarriage problem, Ezra first had Jewish men take an oath to follow through with the dissolution of marriages. He then taught them the Law of Yhwh. As a result, the people were changed.
The list of Israelites who sinned is a bit shorter than it could have been. This was because some of the men who had married foreign wives had children from the marriage.
Intermarriage with non-Jews
In the United States, there has been an increase in intermarriage between Jews and non-Jews. This has been attributed to a rise in immigration to the country.
However, the increase in the numbers of non-Jewish immigrants is not the only thing that affects the rate of intermarriage.
It is clear that intermarriage has been an unwelcome trend in the American Jewish community. In fact, it has had a negative impact on the Jewish people, including the lack of a community’s identity.
It was in the 1960s and 1970s that the Jewish community experienced the beginning of a cultural and societal shift. These years were a critical time for revolution, civil rights, and feminism.
Intermarriage between Jews and non-Jews has long been an issue or concern to the Jewish community. Though it has been seen as a threat to the continuity of the Jewish people, it has also been an opportunity for people to develop and gain social connections.
Dismissal of foreign wives
The divorce of a foreign wife isn’t exactly for the faint hearted but it can be quite a fun family event. It was especially true in ancient Egypt where marriages between Egyptians and Romans often occurred.
There are many factors in this but one would assume the Egyptians were at least aware of the law of attraction.
A recent study found that divorce of the foreign wife was not uncommon amongst Jews in the Middle East and North Africa. Some of these relationships are recorded in the early chapters of the Bible.
In the grand scheme of things, the hottest marriage is among the more complicated ones. The marriage of Ahab and Jezebel is the best known of the bunch.
It also holds the distinction of having the longest time elapsed between weddings, if you discount the aforementioned and those eloped in the first place.
Ezra’s marriage to his sister-in-law is a bit more straightforward, though it could be a stretch to assume that his wife is the true ruler of his bed.
Biblical literature on foreign wives
The Biblical literature on foreign wives encompasses a wide range of perspectives. They can help us learn more about the history of marriage and how to handle mixed relationship problems.
Despite the diverse views on the subject, one thing we can be sure of is that the Bible does allow intermarriage.
However, in Ezra-Nehemiah, the emphasis is on revolutionary purity. This is a way to protect Israel from idolatry and false worship. It is based on a deep theological conviction.
Ezra thought that the Law should not forbid the marriage of foreign women to Israelites. He also acted in accordance with the Law when he lived in Egypt. But once he returned to Jerusalem, the seven places confronted him.
He was a leader of the Jews when they returned from exile. He and his wife, Shecaniah, were determined to follow the Mosaic laws. Their approach was a reaction to the foreign women they had encountered.
